Statement:
These are desolate images, which Maria Zalinska shows us of the city; blind walls, empty spaces, dark shadows.
In each painting, a large and centrally placed woman dominates the view. Never does she show her face. While the city is painted with covering, heavy monochromes, the woman’s body is often not more than a pencil outline on the naked canvas.
The woman; young, pretty and powerful, stays dim.
This lonely and omnipresent one, is the only living thing in the grey and empty geometry of the city. Her sexuality is a mysterious, overpowering force of nature.
Vita / Lebenslauf:
Though my work is largely figurative, in my mind I move on the borders of abstract.
In my work I express a love-hate relationship towards people and all that’s man-made. Though subjects I work on may seem diverse, this relationship is their common ground.
