Vita / Lebenslauf:
Samij is born in Kolkata and has graduated from Calcutta University with BITECH in Leather Technology. In 2002 he started designing artworks with a company called Light Ice and embarked on successful projects designing for British Rock star and former Pink Floyd bassist Roger Waters in his “In the Flesh Tour”. Later in 2004, he worked on a project (Tull For Tsunami Victims), this time with Jethro Tull frontman Ian Anderson. In between he worked with various small bands and cultural groups promoting art for their organizations. By the end of 2005, Samij started taking painting as a serious occupation after he got fairly good recognition in India and abroad. He is a self-tutored painter whose vision in art ranges from varied fields: quantum/spiritual/poetic and musical. His last solo exhibition in India was held at the prestigious Taj Residency at Bangalore in October, 07. Titled "Myths and Understanding", the works showcased ranged from Icarus to myths from Hindu iconography with a special section dedicated to social myths of the milieu including a staggering work in acrylic called The Fall of Communism. He has also developed a conceptual Brand Art that deals with the history of a brand, its success and persons behind the stories. Two of his works on Levi-Strauss and Henri Ford where showcased at the Bangalore Exhibition drew considerable media attention. As a part of Corporate Myths, Samij’s main idea was “to share knowledge, to discuss, apprehend identify and classify problems and to rediscover the spirit to characterize the alluring qualities of all myths”. His work on Icarus titled “Icarus’ Triumph in Mid-Air” has found a place among other works of artists like Henri Matisse, Leon Nicholas Kalas, Picasso on the same myth at Island-Ikaria- a gallery dedicated to Icarus and Daedalus. Held at Lennox Gallery, London, the exhibition featured some stunning artworks featuring themes from Pink Floyd’s first album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn and also some earlier albums like Meddle and A Saucerful of Secrets. His book on paintings titled “Green Snow Leopard- A Tribute to Syd Barrett” written by Joy Roy Choudhury and published by ArtVantage was released in London in Nov, 07. He is currently working on art projects based on TS Eliot’s The Wasteland and also on art inspired by W B Yeats to be showcased later this year in London. His other big engagements in 2008 include a solo exhibition "Abeilles femelles noires" or Black Female Bees- Scenes from 19th Century Paris based on erotic/love poems of French Symbolist era belonging to Charles Baudelaire, Stéphane Mallarmé,, Paul Verlaine, Rimbaud and Tristan Corbière.
(For more info, please see http://www.espectro.com/roying/) Samij is also working on project titled Back to the Imaginary/Psyche-Centric Art based on Jacques Lacan. (For more, please see http://www.artmajeur.com/roying/).
Samij loves music and plays the mandolin and percussion. He loves reading and takes his inspiration from Wordsworth, Blake, Einstein and Salvador Dali. He believes that unity of vision in art and also its chaos comes from within as a gift from the divine. The only thing he is aware of when he paints is a respect for the past masters from the cave painters of Altamira to Warhol. He also writes poetry and lyrics which can be read at http://voiceofspirit.wordpress.com/
