Statement:
I work in more than one medium. WOODWORK: An integral part of the creative process is designing, shaping and finishing the work to reveal or discover nature’s handiwork within the grain, color, texture and patterns of wood. I prefer the challenge of working with reclaimed and salvaged wood, i.e. wood typically damaged by bacteria, fungus, insects and moisture. I consider the work to be “green.” The lathe and power tools in my shop are powered by the sun, the primary source of the wood I use is cut with a chainsaw from the forest surrounding my home - from dead or storm-downed trees that have started the decay process. PHOTOGRAPHY: I create digital images that reflect what I encounter walking around my property. They are intended to showcase trees, plants, rocks, and nature's decay process in conjunction with (latest series) images of female figures I originally photographed with 35mm B&W film.
Vita / Lebenslauf:
B.A and M.F.A degrees from the University of Arkansas – Fayetteville. Have worked as a college art instructor, an engineering draftsman, an architectural draftsman, and a craft shop director. More than 2 decades of work in the aerospace industry.
My current wood work involves using sections of trees cut and turned to varying degrees in conjunction with a variety of backgrounds that have been painted, stained, or machined...exploring the aesthetic relationship of nature's revealed designs to man-made geometric shapes and forms.
Am also exploring creation of digital images that are "sandwiches" of multiple photographs, and experimenting with combining 35mm film that has been scanned and incorporated digitally into the final image.
