Statement:
My sculptural books evolved from a delight in pure form, with the play of light creating shadows and volume. I was excited by the combination of delicate detail and strength, and of simplicity and complexity - also by the surprise element created when the plain flat book covers open to reveal thrusting sculptural forms. Sometimes I like to combine images and words and colour, fracturing them with cuts but at others I like to emphasise the geometry and symmetry of monochrome abstract sculpture. Recently I have been investigating books displaying human medical conditions, both physical and psychological, incorporating defects and blemishes - combining graphic and sculptural elements, and employing partly literal partly abstracted interpretations.
Vita / Lebenslauf:
After an Oxford MA in history and a Postgraduate Certification in Education, I gained a City & Guilds qualification in Creative Embroidery, and later a degree in Art and Design at the University of Hertfordshire. I mostly work on artist's books, but also create 2D works on paper, for exhibition and commisssion - and also teach workshops in making simple books and pop-up techniques.
