Artist’s Statement
This series is a departure from my previous figurative work. The initial paintings referenced landscape photographs taken during my time in wilderness settings. As I worked, I realized that though the photographs were a good starting point, they quickly became a hindrance to the freedom I was searching for through abstract painting. I decided to approach the painting surface without any reference materials, relying solely on the sensual and intuitive response to the paint itself, to color, and to composition. However, a sense of place and memory of landscapes continued to emerge. I toiled with this realization, but decided to see where it would lead. The result was a rewarding sense of personal renewal and inspiration, which I believe is reflected in this work.
I named this series “borderline” because it reflects the interplay between abstraction and a sense of landscape, between creativity and reality. My goal in the studio is to play that edge.
