Katherine Keltner

USA (United States)

Kunstart: Malerei
Technik: Mischtechnik
Stil: Abstrakt

Statement:
All of my works are connected by an impulse to interpret and impose a structure on the ethereal or passing moment: an attempt to control the organic. My source materials are shadows, water, dirt, acorns, text (non-organic). From these materials – what I think of as sketches – I try to extract data with which to construct a system of description.

While the works remain a portrait of the original object or image, they no longer “look” like what they began as. Instead, they are a series of marks that make up another way to describe the original object, something perhaps like a DNA footprint.

Line is visible throughout my work, whether as a graphite, hand-drawn line, a line of light, a line of circles, or a line of thread. These lines exist deliberately within an established space, but once within these boundaries, the lines endlessly repeat. The rounded shapes I draw, the thread I wrap myself in, the lines I draw, the webs I weave, the tree branches I wrap, all stem from the belief that the making is a process of thought in itself, and that repeating an idea, an action, beyond the point of necessity, will render something other than what I planned as the final form.

At the root of this work is a desire to capture what is essentially unrecordable as a means to understand what seems to be orderless. If I can freeze something that doesn’t really stop (ultimately time) and make tangible what isn’t, then I can examine the components that make it up and begin to place myself within a context beyond what I can see and touch.
