"People draw empty, hopeless illusion, and I draw sad but true reality"
about D Hwang-
The artist D Hwang's series of work starts with observing the ironic manners comtemporary people have towards machine culture. From these reasons, he reads the fears of machine, and the desires for nature, among the people praise digital and the return to nature in 21st century today. Human being, who has injected their desires though machine now faces it as a treat to mankind and this planet. But the artist illustrates, before denying or affirming machine culture, a personal narration of a person who has lived through such an era is given. Before separating and taking a side among the contradictions between nature and civilization, or mankind and machine, instead, we can discover the essence of human nature, concealed and thrown-away into the shadows caused by the beast of machine culture. Ironically, the already machinized soul of the artist does not mean loss of life, but instead return to nature. As the artist absorbs the fatal environment around him, the confrontations between machine, human being, and nature is obsolete. The belief that machine itself is part of nature, this is what the artist claims as INDUSTRIAL EXPRESSIONISM.
The artist D Hwang suggests a new concept of GARAT as a collection of his artistic practices, and movements towards a revolution in culture. GARAT is an organic life form in its own as it shows the artist himself, the identity of the work, and the society and environment surrounding the artist, which from inside, it is not merely an existence of creating a work of art, but it is a circular existence which gives back and forth the energy surrounding the work and its environment, causing an evolution along with its surroundings. The artist shows through a imaginary organic beings called GARAT the artist's personal message towards the narrow-minded, exclusive cultural unbalance of Korea.
The GS(Garat Sculpture) series shows the tragic destiny of the artist himself as he lives through the oppressive system of comtemporary society through machines of broken functions. With the start of a bit rebellious motivation, the theme of the GS series is ironically freedom, not oppression. Though it cannot operate anymore, this can in contrast, present a twist in meaning as infinite creative freedom can be given, saying the dramatic message of "an infinite mental freedom against social oppression ".
The COMBINED PAINTING SERIES shows the broad circular nature of GARAT. The artist uses the byproducts from the GS series, and without throwing it away, these are recycled, arranged or attached to steel plates or wood, transforming it into a living form of art. The abstract nature of the GS series is a clear counterpart to formative art, which the entire circular structure of the GARAT series performs the ventilation and relaxation. The COMBINED PAINTING SERIES may be a single series of work and also a passage to a 3rd work. The artist shows through this series not merely the simple material recycling, but instead the broad recycling of meaning connected the discontinued surfaces between material and concept, conception and abstract, lightness and gravity.
about Garat-
GARAT is a compound word of Garage and Art, being both the artist's realm of D Hwang as well as his identity. GARAT is not only the designation of the space or result work, but life itself from within it. GARAT is the safe house and the hell, the barricade from the world and the construction site of reality.
GARAT maintains a purely anarchistic position, revolting against the mainstream norm of "shock values of comtemporary art". GARAT re-discovers and practices the essential values of labor in art, something lost in comtemporary art. GARAT seeks a harmony with the basic elements through hard-working labor and the materials of metal. Sacred sweat reveals the expressions
of desires, ready to burst along with the fire and metals, the brush and paper, and the earth and wood, which from the painful
process comes to offsprings of GARAT. Though cold and dark, the artist states that this is not ugly, but instead to the artist himself, the extremely everyday materials, which in essence gives the everyday energy, along with the dismantlement from the wasted by products, which is combined, and circularly arranged to created a freakish genre of"INDUSTRIAL EXPRESSIONISM".
