STATEMENT
My current body of work has been developed over the past few years in conjuncture with concepts and interests relating to gender, culture, history, morality, and nature. A primary focus in my work has been imagery from art historical references, particularly from the Baroque and Rococo periods, that exhibit lush ornamentation of either the physical body or the decorated environment. Sometimes these sources are directly quoted through appropriations and at other times they are altered and collaged into complex compositions. In my drawings and prints, my adornment of space and surface with ornamentation is more than an attempt to decorate, it is also a vehicle through which recognition of nature is employed and its energies of creation are explored. In our current consumer culture, ornamentation is experiencing a rebirth, but still the notions of ornamentation laid down by the modernists are held firm by much of the public, often without recognition of its origins. Therefore ornamentation is still linked in the minds of many to immorality and inferiority (often by those adorned in their own language of ornamentation). Though my imagery is coded and may sometimes be elusive as a result, in its creation I believe there to be a constant element of visual pleasure that can be experienced without specific descriptions of the symbolic sources used. It is my goal that through the development of these visually stimulating and pleasurable works, that the language used will allow the viewer to build and interpret their own message or narrative.
