Statement:
I called this series of ciment fondu sculptures "Portrait of a Lowry Generation "

Vita / Lebenslauf:
My northern Lancashire roots and growing up amongst the hardship and daily grind of the lives of working class people of Salford in the 1940 s and 50 s has had a profound influence on how I see as an artist and make my work as a figurative sculptor/printmaker/painter.

I was born in 1946 and grew up in the industrial landscape that Lowry depicted in his work.I was one of the poor kids in his paintings and drawings, playing and running around in the cobbled streets of Salford or playing and walking with my Mum and Dad in Piccadilly sq. in Manchester in the 1950 s as seen in the painting by Lowry.

My Grandfather was born and grew up close to Salford Docks and served the people of his community in his butchers shop and who lived in and around the tenement flats of Oldfield Rd Salford as depicted in Lowrys painting and drawings. My Father as a kid was one of the so called "matchstick figures"running around the streets of Oldfield Rd Salford tenement flats which were later swept away in slum clearance.

As a young woman of 15 years old attending the Salford Art School as Lowry did many years before me,I would trudge across the iron bridge crossing the River Irwell on into Peel Park, past the grandstand through the industrial landscape Lowry loved to paint. I saw the industrial views from the red brick building windows of Salford Art School, Lowry drew so many times.

What comes through strongly in these sculptures of portraits of the psyche is a residue of feeling deep in me,coming from the poor ,raw, working class experience of my growing up time in Lower Kersal Lower Broughton, Salford City. The sculptures speak of the enormous emotional courage and determination that I witnessed as a child and young woman, that the Salford people of my time needed to survive.
