Statement:
Using manipulated, recycled images I explore fashion, gender and the culture of the body. My recent series “Frau”, comprised of mixed media works on panel and paper comments directly on Fashion’s treatment of the body as a commodity.
Born in France and living in Louisiana, Texas and California before my family moved to Hawaii, I have developed a need to observe the culture as a means of adjustment and survival. Culture and social control have continued to provide the basis for my work over the years.
I began my formal training as a dancer at the age of nine. I received a degree in Drama with an emphasis in Dance from the University of Hawaii and went on to form Brand X Theatre, a dance and performance art partnership and pick up company anchored in San Francisco. Studying at the State University of New York and working for Franklin Furnace Archive Inc., in New York, provided the foundation of my visual art study. My informal training began years earlier with my Mother, a fashion designer and my Father a dental lab fabricator. This training becomes evident in my current series with my use of cutting, shape, pattern, texture and color.
