Statement:
My desire to see the deeper meaning beneath the superficial extends to every
thing I create. I seek to bring out and express my impression of each subject I
paint, especially in my portrait work. The direction is clear to me as I create - as
a seasoned and mature artist, I am able to visualize the end before I begin.
Therefore, I am always trying to push something to bring it to its most effective
point of clarity
My paintings leave an impression on the viewer; in the way I bring out the
subject’s personality, yet still have my personal style show through the work.
This is done by the way I compose my subjects, and my use of color and lighting.
Painting for me is essential - like breathing,
I have to do it.

Vita / Lebenslauf:
Al Johnson’s art may be seen as an inclusive vision that captures the classical, weaves it with the contemporary and refracts it through the prism of his remarkable individuality. While formally trained in the techniques of the great masters, he uses his own stylistic expression. In fact, it goes to the essence of jazz by bringing together many influences while infusing the expression of his individuality.
With this artistic vision he can be compared to Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme” in the way it expresses his experience of feelings toward the universe for his fellow man.
Mr. Johnson attended Pratt Institute, the Albert Pale School of Commercial Arts and the Art Students League of New York.
He has exhibited in many corners of the world, including the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum in Japan and at the Guangzhou International Art Fair in Beijing, China. His fine art continues to be shown and collected internationally. In addition, his permanently installed commissioned portrait of Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm is on display in Brooklyn Borough Hall and his hand painted ceramic art called “Energy Tiles” are also permanent installations at Bedford Stuyvesant YMCA in Brooklyn, New York.
Other projects that Al has undertaken include creating the original renderings for the Georgia Aquarium, the largest aquarium in the world. He also continues to create new visions in the feature film, television and music video industry. You can view his commercial storyboard work in films such as “the Fountain”, the national Van Heusen commercial aired during the Super Bowl and the HBO Chris Rock Special “Kill the Messenger”. In addition to his many accomplishments in the visual arts, Al also participates in mentorship programs helping to inspire and motivate people of all ages.
