Paula do Prado’s work is concerned with subverting and challenging dominant mainstream views on race, gender and cultural identity. She explores these themes from a deeply personal perspective, drawing upon childhood memories and family folklore to locate, confront and dispel racial myths. Originally from Uruguay, do Prado often makes reference to her cultural roots and the tradition of ‘making do’ and re-appropriation of found and used materials. Her work is strongly influenced by a desire to reconcile her Australian identity with her Latin heritage in a bittersweet attempt to come to terms with her own problematic racial, social and cultural status as an immigrant living on stolen land.
