STATEMENT:
The natural world and the inner world are my inspirations. I aim to rein in a free painterly intuition(expressionism) with the logic of a grid and gentle geometry to convey feeling- with abandon and control. My journey is the risk of the search for truth. It is always on my mind to discover something I don't know, to go somewhere I have not been. My tools range from collected accumulations of inspiration-files of drawings, images, designs- from my own photography; objects gathered from nature, to experimental materials such as water-based rustoleum, gold leaf, and shoe polish- as well as the traditional oils and acrylics.
I begin with an oblique image pressing with urgency. A lot of hard work follows, then as the work progresses it tells me where it wants to go, and if I am a good listener- I succeed. But I try not to will its conclusion. A sort of zen-like focus takes over the will. For me this is a state of truth, and the painting is finished. Titles come to me unconsciously and are inspired by poetry, which I sometimes distort or enhance to convey what is on my conscious mind.
Through 40 years of my practice in fine art, I like to think that I have absorbed the history as well as the craft of painting- while keeping an open mind to new procedures of the 21st C. This frees the boundaries of visual conception and retains the freshness I hope to achieve in my journey.
